Prysmian s.r.l. appointed Studio Pacheco of the theoretical and detailed fluid dynamic study aimed at optimizing the cable terminal assembly, with particular regard to its anti-deflagrant behavior. The electrical and structural configuration of the device and the functioning conditions related to the project have been given by Prysmian S.r.l. and Telecom Italia S.r.l.

The aim of the analysis was to simulate with an high level of detail, both from a qualitative and quantitative point of view, all the physical phenomena which regulate and determine the anti-deflagrant behavior of the examined assembly and to give design suggestion for its optimization. The physical processes of the phenomena involve rapid fluid dynamic aspects which have been solved by the use of advanced fluid dynamic numerical modelling (CFD). The analyzed process which characterizes the explosion's primer and dynamic induced by an electric arc has been studied resorting to the three dimensional modeling.

The numerical modelling gave design indications for the optimization of the anti-deflagrant cable of 170kV.
